Barbara Jacques in her Montreal studio.
Fascinated by the primitive nature of man, Barbara seeks to decode the foundations of our nature to better understand its vulnerabilities. In her approach, she questions the fragility of civilization: who would we be without our modernity? Are human beings more animal than animals themselves? Evolution, is it really occurring? Her painting echoes an obsession of the fatalistic spiral of life, anchored in history. Bestiaries and inventories refer back to the vulnerability and decay of the human race in its fragile splendor (Ref.)
